ENHANCING CHARCOAL BRIQUETTE PRODUCTION USING COCONUT SHELLS AND CORNCOBS IN MANUNGGAL VILLAGE

Abstract

The utilization of coconut shells as charcoal briquettes holds significant economic potential; however, communities in Manunggal Village continue to produce low-value charcoal flakes. This community engagement program aimed to enhance local skills in processing coconut shells and corncobs into value-added briquettes. A practice-based training involving 30 participants covered carbonization, grinding, binder mixing, molding, and drying. Evaluation results indicated an 82% improvement in participants’ understanding based on pretest–posttest assessments. The resulting briquettes met the SNI 01-6235-2000 standards, with moisture content of 5%, ash 4.5%, volatile matter 13.3%, fixed carbon 79.4%, and a calorific value of 6,153 cal/g. This program demonstrates potential to increase household income through product diversification and to promote environmental sustainability by enabling productive utilization of biomass waste.
